Join a challenge event this summer 2008 and raise money for our Rwanda farmer’s

Union Hand-Roasted is working with Africa Now, funded in part by a Comic Relief grant, to run a series of initiatives to improve coffee quality further, build commercial knowledge and address key social and demographic issues facing the farmers of Maraba, Rwanda.

We now need your help this summer to raise additional money for the project so we can fulfil its aims and ambitions for the Maraba community.

This groundbreaking project is extremely ambitious and is a demonstration of just how far we are prepared to deepen our relationships with farmers to understand ways in which quality can be enhanced. The project will introduce:

  • credit schemes such as loans of coffee bikes to assist smallholders to get their coffee cherries to the coffee washing stations faster and in greater quantities;
  • education and knowledge transfer allowing farmers to understand how much profit they make from their coffee harvest, so they can set aside monies for investment the next year;
  • training in bookkeeping, management and finance for co-operative administrative staff;
  • a football tournament to raise the profile of speciality coffee farming among the youth of Maraba, so younger farmers benefit from the opportunities speciality coffee farming offers.

Africa Now is working with a number of top UK sporting events this summer to raise money for its projects. Customers who enter via Union Hand-Roasted will see ALL the money they raise go straight into our Maraba farmer project.
