NEW! Rwanda and Bolivia coffees

New to our collection of coffees for mail order this month are three single estates which have been sourced through programmes promoting excellence in coffee, and which Union Hand-Roasted is deeply involved with: our Rwanda Sovu Golden Cup, Rwanda SOPROCAF Golden Cup and Bolivia Cup of Excellence.

Our first two coffees were sourced through the Golden Cup, which took place in Rwanda last year. The programme was set-up by our partner development organisation based in Rwanda, SPREAD, to showcase the outstanding quality of coffee which is now being achieved by farmers there. The Rwanda Sovu Golden Cup comes from the Sovu washing station, which is part of the Maraba Co-operative which we have been working with for the past six years. The Rwanda SOPROCAF Golden Cup comes from a small co-operative of 100 farmers based in the north of Rwanda, growing a type of Arabica coffee new to Rwanda which is very high yielding but of supreme quality. Both of these coffees were sold at auction at prices well in excess of the Fairtrade price. Read more about the Golden Cup.

Bolivia Cup of Excellence comes from the Flor de Mayo farm in Western Bolivia – and was a finalist in this year’s Cup of Excellence competition. Cup of Excellence is similar to the Golden Cup in that it promotes excellence in coffee, although it has been established for much longer and the coffees are sold via the internet to a much wider collection of buyers. As with the Golden Cup, extremely high prices are achieved and the farmers receive widespread recognition for the quality of their work. The increased Cup of Excellence income has meant farm owner Pedro Castro Conurana can send his son to school. This great coffee has some delicious notes of plum and cherry overlaying deep caramel tones.

Both coffees are available to order now in our online shop, listed alphabetically under ‘coffee – estates’.

Enjoy.
